Family Background

Peter Criscuola is a pseudonym for George Peter John Criscuola, who was born in Brooklyn, New York. His parents, Loretta and Joseph Criscuola, have five children. He is the eldest of the five.

Peter is a mixed-race American with roots in Scafati, Salerno, Italy, who was born to an Italian father.

Married 3 Times: Father Of A Child

The musician, who stands 5 feet 9 inches tall and has two divorces under his belt, welcomed a kid with his second wife.

Peter presently resides with his third wife, Georgia (Gigi) Meese, and the two have been married since May 3, 1998.

Criss had a marriage with Lydia Di Leonardo, a former Playboy Playmate, from January 31, 1970 to September 13, 1979.

He married Debra Jensen, a Coppertone model, on December 22, 1979, and Jenilee was born on April 7, 1981. He married her again on December 22, 1979. They divorced, however, in 1994.

Career

In the early 1970s, Criss drummed for a few tiny New York bands. He placed an advertisement in Rolling Stone Magazine looking for similar bandmates to build a fresh trio after failing to attain the level of success he had anticipated.

Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, two up-and-coming musicians, were drawn to the ad when they heard Criss perform, according to Simmons.

Kiss, a costumed, makeup-wearing rock and roll group that straddles the genres of hard and glam rock and gives live performances that are part concert and part theatrical spectacular with fire, lights, and abundant amounts of audience interaction was formed in 1973 by the trio.

The band was signed to Casablanca Records that year, making them the first band to be signed under the label, but they were only achieving average success three albums into their record contract.

Despite mediocre record sales, they were establishing a solid reputation and gaining popularity as a result of their live shows, and in 1975, Alive!, a double live album was recorded at Detroit’s Cobo Arena and certified Gold.

Destroyer, which featured major anthemic songs by Kiss like Shout It Out Loud, Rock and Roll All Night, and Detroit Rock City; but the ballad Beth, written and sung by Criss, was the album’s biggest commercial success and highest-charting single in 1977.

Kiss would release six more albums before 1980.

Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley developed addictions to narcotics and alcohol as a result of their success, and relationships between the two deteriorated.

Others contend that Criss quit the band because he was dismissed, while Criss claims he quit the organization due to his addiction problems.

Criss went on to do solo albums, work in music production, and make guest appearances on a number of records after that.

Criss has reunited with the band on several occasions since his initial departure from Kiss, including for performances, recordings, and tours; however, the band’s hot and cold interpersonal relationships have prevented a lasting reconciliation with the original members. In 2017, Criss announced his retirement from touring.

Departure from Kiss

He only performed on his own song, “Dirty Livin’,”[15] on Dynasty, and did not participate at all on Unmasked (1980).

Criss was dismissed from Kiss for reasons that are unclear, although it is known that his relationship with his bandmates Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley was not good at the time. Anton Fig, who also played on Ace Frehley’s 1978 solo album, was hired as session drummer for Dynasty and Unmasked[16].

Criss was sacked, according to Gene Simmons, and Paul Stanley discussed Criss’ departure in multiple interviews, notably on Kissology 2.

Criss was fired during a band meeting in which Frehley, Simmons, Stanley, and manager Bill Aucoin voted him out of the band, according to Ace Frehley’s book No Regrets from 2011.

Bill Aucoin (Kiss’s first manager) is interviewed about Criss being “let go” on a spoken word CD released in 1999 called 13 Classic Kiss Stories.

But, according to Criss, he left the band. “We shot a video for the song ‘Shandi’ after the decision to let Peter go had been confirmed,” Stanley said of the shoot for “Shandi.” Criss was out of the band at the time, so it was shot in one day.

He knew it was the last time he would perform with KISS before the video shoot. He took his makeup bag with him as he left at the end of the day. It was a big moment, but it wasn’t tearful. Peter was about to depart. This was the last time we would see him in the band, and he had been fired from us”[17]

On May 18, 1980, Criss formally departed Kiss. As a consequence, Kiss’ European tour was postponed until the end of August, giving the band adequate time to locate a replacement drummer in Brooklyn-born Eric Carr.

Solo career

Criss started recording his second solo album, Out of Control, in March 1980. Despite being a favorite among Criss fans, the record was released later in the year and was a commercial failure.

Let Me Rock You, released in 1982, was a similar failure, with one song penned by Gene Simmons. Criss was not photographed on the album cover in the United States, but he did wear his Kiss makeup. There was a time when I did that.

Criss was a member of a number of bands during the rest of the 1980s and early 1990s, but they all lasted less than a year. The Keep, which featured ex-Kiss guitarist Mark St., was one of them. The name John is derived from the Greek Iao, which means “to live.”

In the spring of 1986, Criss joined Jane Booke on lead vocals, Bob Raylove on bass, and JP (John Pakalenka) on guitar, who is presently with Buckner Funken Jazz in Denver.

Before Criss left the band to raise his daughter Jenilee, Balls of Fire only performed seven shows.

Then there was the Criss Penridge Alliance, which included Peter Criss and Stan Penridge of Montage (Mike Hutchens – guitar[19] in the 1970s jazz rock fusion band.

John Moss – drums and Tony Crow – keyboards) rehearsed 39 songs from the first three Peter Criss solo albums, and performed around 10 shows in total. Allen Woody played bass for Govt Mule, Allman Brothers Band.

Criss appeared on the syndicated radio program Metal Shop and discussed his time in Kiss from a more positive perspective than before, promoting the book he was writing at the time, an autobiography to be titled.

Without a kiss, there is no face. In addition, he revealed his vision of founding his own record label, Catman Records, one day.

Criss formed a band called “Criss” in the early 1990s, which would eventually include Mike Stone of Queensrÿche. He performed his last solo show on June 17, 2017, in New York City at the Cutting Room. This band released the Criss EP in December 1993 and the Cat #1 album in August 1994.

Return to Kiss

Criss was a part of the official Kiss Konvention in Los Angeles in 1995, which resulted in a live performance for MTV Unplugged. Kiss announced a reunion tour with all four original members at a press conference in April 1996.

The reunited Kiss released a studio album, Psycho Circus, in 1998 as a result of the 1996–97 Alive/Worldwide Tour.

Criss had one lead vocal (a tune titled “I Ultimately Found My Way,” penned by guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley and Bob Ezrin) as well as a co-vocal in the verses with the rest of the band for the tune “You Want the Best.” Criss played drums on just one tune on the record (“Into the Void,” Ace Frehley’s lone lead vocal tune).

Second and third departures

In 2001, Eric Singer took over for Criss who had left due to a contract dispute. Before leaving Kiss again in March 2004, he rejoined the band in late 2002 and played on the Kiss Symphony: Alive IV DVD and CD. After the Rocksimus Maximus Tour, the band had decided not to extend his contract.

Singer took up the “Catman” character, and he was once again replaced. Kiss performing with Ace Frehley’s and his replacement, he said, was “horrible.”

It isn’t us who’ll be on their face, no matter who they choose. You may substitute the Lone Ranger’s mask for another’s, but it isn’t the Lone Ranger[23].

Acting

Criss has appeared on Fox networks “Millennium” and HBO drama “Oz” in 2002, in addition to playing Martin Montgomery in the 1978 made-for-television science fiction film “Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park.”

Peter left Kiss in 1980 to pursue a solo career, releasing two albums and touring from band to band until 1996, when he rejoined the band and took part in a reunion tour. Criss drew criticism for only drumming on “Into the Void” on the group’s album, which was released in 1998.

In 2000, he destroyed his drums on stage and left the band again, but returned in 2002 after repairs. Eventually, in 2004, he announced his retirement and released “One for All” in 2007.
