In the early 1970s, Criss drummed for a few tiny New York bands. He placed an advertisement in Rolling Stone Magazine looking for similar bandmates to build a fresh trio after failing to attain the level of success he had anticipated.
Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, two up-and-coming musicians, were drawn to the ad when they heard Criss perform, according to Simmons.
Kiss, a costumed, makeup-wearing rock and roll group that straddles the genres of hard and glam rock and gives live performances that are part concert and part theatrical spectacular with fire, lights, and abundant amounts of audience interaction was formed in 1973 by the trio.

Solo career
Criss started recording his second solo album, Out of Control, in March 1980. Despite being a favorite among Criss fans, the record was released later in the year and was a commercial failure.
Let Me Rock You, released in 1982, was a similar failure, with one song penned by Gene Simmons. Criss was not photographed on the album cover in the United States, but he did wear his Kiss makeup. There was a time when I did that.
Criss was a member of a number of bands during the rest of the 1980s and early 1990s, but they all lasted less than a year. The Keep, which featured ex-Kiss guitarist Mark St., was one of them. The name John is derived from the Greek Iao, which means “to live.”
